How to Hang and Display Your Art Like a Pro

You’ve printed your art — now it’s time to hang it with confidence. Whether you’re prepping for a show, selling to collectors, or refreshing your studio, these expert tips will help you display your work like a gallery pro.

1. The Art-to-Wall Ratio

  • Measure your wall

  • Multiply by 0.57 to get ideal artwork width

  • Centre the piece or group accordingly

2. Hang at the Right Height

  • Use the "museum standard": centre of the artwork should be 145cm from the floor

  • For pieces with hanging wires, calculate tension drop to position nails correctly

3. Working with Furniture

  • Above sofas: bottom of artwork should sit 15–20cm above

  • Over fireplaces: hang 10–30cm above the mantel

  • Over beds: align with the centre of the headboard

4. Hanging a Group or Gallery Wall

  • Cluster artworks around a 145cm centre line

  • Keep 5–7cm spacing between frames

  • Balance heavier or darker pieces to the left (Western audiences read left-to-right)

5. Bonus: Hanging Along a Staircase

  • Centre each piece 145cm from every third step to maintain a clean diagonal flow

Conclusion

Display matters — and knowing how to hang your art gives it the space and presence it deserves. For collectors, it builds trust. For artists, it’s a way to honour your own work. Need help? Ask Arteum for framing and installation support.
